Finally! Plants are growing and the danger of frost has passed, but what can you do if you need color…now? What about adding a variety of containers full of annuals to your front doorstep or along the border of your garden beds? Both containers and annuals not only add instant color but their inherent versatility allow you to do something a little different every year while showing a bit (or a lot!) of your personality.
Don’t get me wrong, the beautiful yearly repetition of your perennial garden are just as you planned. But adding pops of color with container annuals can be a great way to spice up or complement the perennial color scheme you may have carefully selected.
There are several reasons why adding container annuals to your home landscape are a great idea, but I do it to make a great first impression! Think about what you want your guest or a passerby to really notice…would you like to make your entry pop, elevate your home’s architectural style, or just make your garden landscape look like you’ve given it an upgrade? Another consideration for us weather-dependent garden folk is that container annuals are an unlimited way to introduce a touch of tropical without having to worry about how we’re going to help them survive the winter.
I encourage you to splurge a little bit with your plant budget this year and give annuals a chance, showcasing them in the wide variety of containers now available. Containers and annuals come in so many different shapes, sizes, and colors (and even different materials for containers) so have fun. Pick a theme you like, add a container or two to your entrance or garden landscape and stick with it…if you find yourself dissatisfied with the end result don’t stress, you can pick something different next year.
